paper lamp
Okay, so – let’s talk about paper lamp decors. I love them. Always have.
They’re light (literally and vibe-wise), sculptural, and kind of magical in how they diffuse light. There’s something very calming about the way paper glows. It’s soft, warm, not in-your-face. I think that’s why they work so well in bedrooms, reading corners, or anywhere you want to feel a little more chill.
The classic rice paper pendants? Still obsessed. They’re affordable, iconic, and somehow go with everything—from a super minimal Japandi space to a chaotic maximalist one.
It’s giving timeless, but also a little edgy depending on the shape.
I’m also really into the newer, more experimental paper lamps – like the ones that look crinkled or folded, almost like art pieces. They can totally act as the focal point in a room without trying too hard.
BUT – and this is important – they can be fragile. Like, you bump into one too many times and you’re looking at a tear. So I usually skip them in high-traffic zones or homes with curious pets. Also, if you’re into super bright lighting, paper shades might not be your thing. They mute everything, which I personally love, but I know some people need more brightness.

And the literal icons? The Noguchi Akari lamps.
If paper lamps are the linen pants of lighting, Noguchi’s are like custom-tailored vintage designer ones. Same vibe, just leveled way up.
I honestly think they’re one of the best examples of how functional design can still be poetic. Isamu Noguchi took something as humble as rice paper and bamboo and turned it into sculpture. His Akari lamps are light fixtures, but they also feel like floating art. There’s this quiet drama to them – without being loud or flashy. I love that.
I’ve used them in both minimal, almost brutalist interiors and in softer, more wabi-sabi spaces. They adapt. That’s part of the genius. You can have one giant one above your dining table and it holds the whole room together without yelling for attention. Or you can do a cluster in a corner and it turns into this dreamy light installation.
